Every year, I buy the same planner and reserve the last blank page for my New Year’s intentions.

I started this ritual back in 2018, and it’s become something I genuinely look forward to as the year begins.

Over time, it’s been meaningful to look back and see what I’ve accomplished, which intentions stood the test of time, and which never made it beyond the page, without judgment, only reflection.

I usually purchase a new planner early in the year and take the entire month to give myself space to listen, notice patterns, and let the right intentions take shape. I’ve learned that the ones set too quickly rarely last. After that, I lock them in on February 1st.

One intention that’s already clear this year is to continue deepening our work in coaching and neurofeedback, alongside ongoing training and education in the mental health space.

There’s a creek in Alaska called Six Mile, where every summer, melting snow from the mountains feeds the rushing water, and the creek begins to swell and widen. As it does, it slowly starts to erode its banks. Trees that once stood tall and steady begin to shift. Some are pulled into the current.

But others do something remarkable.

They start to lean. Away from the water. Back toward the forest. You can see them growing at strange angles, their trunks tilted like they’ve lost their balance. Locals call them drunken trees.

What looks like an imbalance is actually a form of survival.

Somehow, the tree senses that the ground beneath it is no longer solid.
It doesn’t resist. It doesn’t cling to how things used to be. It simply begins to grow in a new direction.

That’s the part that stays with me. It adapts. Silently. Instinctively.

Finally getting around to listening to Brene Brown’s new podcast. Listening to it gave me some perspective when thinking about and moving through what’s currently going on.
This pandemic has all of us doing things for the first time. For some, it’s not seeing their parents as often as they used to, not being able to watch sports, having to cook every night, or becoming more of a homebody. For me, it’s having to home school my kids while taking care of a 9 month old.
My biggest takeaway from the podcast was : What are your expectations around first times?
My expectations around homeschooling while taking care of a newborn: These kids are going to learn today (in my Kevin Hart voice) and I’ll get everything done even if it wears me the hell out. Reality check: The kids have food, some of their school work is done and the baby is happy. What’s something new you are doing? What were your expectations of it?

Finally getting around to listening to Brene Brown’s new podcast. Listening to it gave me some perspective when thinking about and moving through what’s currently going on.
This pandemic has all of us doing things for the first time. For some, it’s not seeing their parents as often as they used to, not being able to watch sports, having to cook every night, or becoming more of a homebody. For me, it’s having to home school my kids while taking care of a 9 month old.
My biggest takeaway from the podcast was : What are your expectations around first times?
My expectations around homeschooling while taking care of a newborn: These kids are going to learn today (in my Kevin Hart voice) and I’ll get everything done even if it wears me the hell out. Reality check: The kids have food, some of their school work is done and the baby is happy. Although, I’m behind on putting the laundry away and the kitchen is constantly a mess - the kids are loving this time together.
